MLB Cheating Scandal

Recently, the Houston Astros and the Boston Red Sox have been accused of cheating in previous years, the Astros in 2017 and the Red Socks in 2018. There could be many more teams involved in this scandal, but these are the main two teams that got caught.

The way in which they cheated ruins the fundamental concept of baseball. These teams are accused of using cameras placed all around the stadium to steal signals from opposing teams. Normally a batter does not know the pitch coming, but the batters on this team are given an advantage that makes it easier to put the ball in play. The way in which the coach allegedly communicated the stolen signal to the batter is through a buzzer. The player wears a buzzer under his jersey and the coach may tell him what pitch is coming; for example one buzz fastball, two buzzes curve ball, etc.

The MLB has major decisions to make in the future regarding this issue. When asked about the trust lost between these two teams, MLB commissioner, Rob Manfred said, “Look, I think that trust is something that has to be earned back.”

Both of these teams have been very successful in the past years, both winning the World Series. The question is whether these teams should have their World Series titles revoked. This would be a hard task to follow through with, but it is certain that these teams will have different punishments including fines, draft picks taken away, and possibly postseason suspensions. Two of the main players involved in this scandal are Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve. In a recent press conference, Bregman said, “I’m really sorry about the choices made by my team, my organization and me.” While Altuve said, “The whole Astros organization and the team feels bad about what happened in 2017.” Even though the trust has been lost between the fans and those involved in this scandal, Bregman and Altuve both hope to regain that trust.
